About Us

Anne-Marie Felicitas, the founder, conductor and choreographer of The Slappyfeatherwhistle Nose-Flute Ensemble, started her Nose-Flute training at age 15 with Maestro John Ullyatt. After playing solo for two years, she then trained many of her friends how to play during the filming of the infomercial for Reusable Toilet Paper (A product she invented during Halloween). This guest appearance on the commercial was the very first performance for the young group. Within weeks they were performing everywhere from shopping mall parking lots to The Winspear Centre for Music. They soon became known as The Slappyfeatherwhistle NoseFlute Ensemble.

The group is comprised of 8 people. 6 Nose-Flautists, 1 pianist and 1 conductor. All ranging from the ages of 13 to 25. They play a wide variety of music including Mozart, Beethoven, Tangos, Folk Songs, to anything that will fit the season or appropriate event. They have played for numerous events including Fundraisers, Cabarets, Christmas parties, Corporate events, Dinners, Music Festivals, Talk shows, etc. Its not just the music of the Nose-Flute that gets people’s attention, but also the impressive choreography that accompanies their live peformances.

They have played in venues all over Alberta, including The Winspear Centre for Music, The Arden, The Varscona, The Roxy and Citadel Theatres, CKUA Radio, CBC Radio, A-Channel T.V., Shaw T.V., Careers T.V., They made their first national appearance on a Canadian late night talk show called Open Mike with Mike Bullard and then on CBC TV's On The Road Again with Wayne Rostad. Although their audiences always laugh at the fact that they play music with their noses, the group accepts the laughter but knows that this unique instrument has a history behind it, and has been apart of many cultures around the world.

The Nose-Flute that The SFW Nose-Flute Ensemble play is based on a Brazilian traditional Samba whistle originally used for hunting. Other Nose-Flutes originate from the the Phillipines, Borneo, Malaysia, Hawaii, and Indonesia. However these Nose-Flutes are very hard to find. Where the Nose-Flute actually orginated from is still a question to be answered. Anne-Marie hopes to make a trip to South East Asia to do more research on this instrument in the near future.

The Slappyfeatherwhistle Nose-Flute Ensemble know that the Nose-Flute is not accepted as a serious instrument in most music circles. However, the ensemble believes that no instrument should ever be ignored by the musical world, and they hope to educate as well as enrich the lives of people musically through their performances. The SFW Nose-Flute Ensemble hope that one day the Nose-Flute will be accepted into the pantheon of noble instruments.
